Investing in the future

Sponsors are needed: for children in India

CIfI runs a number of children’s homes and projects in various regions in India: children are cared for who are orphans, or whose parents are too poor to provide for them and to send them to school.

Millions of children live on the streets in India, homeless, unloved, misused, hungry. They are dependent on begging, or forced to live a life of crime or prostitution with no way out of the misery. They don’t know that God loves them. They have been rejected by their family and by society, with no chance of an education or integration.

45% of the population is still 15 or under and out of every 1,000 children only 125 will survive their first year. Girls are in particular danger: because only boys are “wanted” children, the girls are often not fed properly, they receive no medical treatment and if they have not already been aborted, then they are often killed or left to fend for themselves. In some regions of India there are now only half as many girls as boys, this in turn leads to cruel & corrupt wedding rituals for the girls.

  • Sponsors for familiesIn one home in Orissa there are 30 children from one mountain tribe, which is totally cut off from education and medical treatment.
  • In a shelter in Orissa children are cared for in a feeding program.
  • In one children’s home in Tamil Nadu there are 300 gypsy children who live near there families. They find great difficulty in integrating into “normal” Indian society.
  • A home for widows and orphans with 50 beds has been constructed in Maharashtra following the terrible earthquake in 2003.
  • Mose Ministries in Trichy is home for some 90 girls who would otherwise have been killed for gender specific reasons. A further home is planned in North India.
  • In Bombay there is a street kids project with streetwork among roughly 300 kids and a residential home for up to 15 boys.
  • CIfI has a kindergarten project for slum kids in Bombay’s largest slum area.
  • An orphanage is planned in the Tsunami area on the coast of Southern India.

The Experience

... of many years shows that one can really only help and make a real impression on children when they have a new daily routine. Therefore the aim of these homes is to provide the children a school education and if possible a job training which allows them eventually to stand on their own feet – even for handicapped children.

Devoted Christians live with the kids, look after them and provide for them. They give them a real home and the chance to get to know Jesus as their personal friend.

In cases where kids still have a family, they treat the home like a boarding school and keep in regular contact with their family. We decide on new admissions yearly at the start of the school year.

It is easy to help...

  • Tsunami Victims: still homelessIt costs only Euro 30 per month to take care of a child and to send them to school.
  • As not every child has a sponsor the money is always divided between all the children to cover their costs.
  • However you can still receive a photo of one of these children with the details listed here, so that you can pray for them especially. As the actual costs (for the home and workers with the kids) are often higher than the donations received, we may assign one child to several different sponsors.
  • Due to reasons of language barriers it is not possible to maintain direct personal contact to the children by letter, or by sending them invitations or presents. We would need to appoint more workers to carry out the translation work and it would also not be fair on those children who do not have sponsors and could create disharmony.
  • However for interested parties it is possible to visit one of the homes during a short-term mission assignment – please contact us for information!
